Audie Murphy: Brave Soldier, American Hero

Post War & Death

In September of 1945 after twenty-seven months of combat, Audie Murphy left the army as a first lieutenant and went on to become and actor. He starred in over forty motion pictures and netted about 2 million dollars but unfortunately failed business dealings forced him into bankruptcy in 1968. Like many men and women who have seen first hand the horrors of war, Audie suffered from Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder which also led to severe alcoholism, gambling as well as dangerous drug addictions. May 28th 1971, with close to nothing Audie Murphy died in a plane crash while on a business trip. Although in fact the very thing that made him a hero, may have been the cause of a tragic end to his life, his grave is the 2nd most visited in Arlington National Cemetery only preceded by President J. F. Kennedy.
